The best diet is the one you will stick to! You will almost always lose weight if you eat fewer calories than you burn, gain weight if you do the opposite (the laws of energy balance), and maintain weight by changing nothing.

Different eating styles, however, can make it easier to reach your goals. Sometimes people are told to follow a specific diet. Other times, people just want to feel better and want to experiment!

Low carb eating styles such as Keto and Paleo can make it much easier for some people to feel full, and thus eat fewer calories. However, athletes need the most carbohydrates! And these high-fat, high-protein diets can cause insulin resistance, kidney stones, heart issues like cardiac arrhythmias and dehydration in many people!

If you’re good about portion control, it’s less necessary to restrict your food choices (we typically would recommend adding more health-promoting foods that are low-calorie!), and you may have an easier time sticking to your plan!

Great advice from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) for non-dietitian health professionals (doctors, personal trainers, strength coaches, running coaches, exercise instructors, physical therapists, etc):

“Often, clients come to us with medical conditions or disease. Given its prevalence, many clients may come to us with existing heart disease or a family history of heart disease. Also, clients may come to us with metabolic diseases, such as diabetes. It is outside our scope of practice to treat these diseases with nutrition.

For example, if a client who is working with you does have heart disease, it would be outside our scope of practice to attempt to “treat it” by utilizing a very-low-carbohydrate or very-low-calorie diet.”

Registered dietitians are the experts and authority on diet plans, meal plans, special diets, nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, etc. Dietitians (who some people call Nutritionist) have the required medical training to know who needs to be on specific diet, what the definition of a special diet is, like a cardiac diet (heart health diet)
